If you've been watching the news lately there's no doubt you will have seen countless stories of the difficulties the latest cold freeze has had on the elderly. A recent study has stated that 1 million pensioners cut back on heating so that they can eat, and many go to coffee shops etc to keep warm. Even more worrying is that 2
5,000 pensioners die in this country every year through Hypothermia or related illness. That led me to think about equity release and the benefits this product can hold. (yeah I know I'm a bit weird like that!)
Now I must state that releasing equity from your property must only be entered into with serious thought, family discussions and legal consultation but why should someone who has worked hard to own their own property sit in the cold when there is the possibility to release some money from the home to make life that little bit more comfortable in their later years?
I mean, why go to a coffe shop to keep warm when you could go to a warmer climate for a few months?
Why keep the heating down when releasing a few thousand can keep you snug, warm and comfortable?
Well the problem could be that, out of the 11.4 million pensioners that live in the UK, only 46% of pensioners know what Equity Release is. So, with this in mind have a look at this site from unbiased.co.uk. It has all the advantages and disadvantages of equity release schemes.
So, even though the thaw has started a little, next time someone you love is sitting in the cold yet own their own property tell them about equity release. After all, it's not about their money; it's about their life!
